The skinny on big government

Almost 20 years ago, Bill Clinton said “The era of big government is over.” He was lying, of course. But for a reason: To convince voters he wasn’t too dumb to grasp that painful experience over at least three decades had proved big compulsory bureaucratic state programs weren’t just wasteful but actively harmful. Time to check those balances

What is government for? Where does it get its powers? What can’t it do? Such questions are often scorned as “academic” by the brisk pragmatists who rush about the corridors of power concocting hare-brained schemes to offend and annoy the public at great cost.
