In my latest National Post column I say Remembrance Day is not a pacifist occasion, even on the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. (On which, and on the meaning and impact of World War I generally, see again The Great War Remembered on YouTube or in my online store.)
“Nothing brings a better world into being than the stated truth. You’re going to have to pay a price for that, but that’s fine. You’re going to pay the price for every bloody thing you do and don’t do. You don’t get to choose not to pay a price, you get to choose which poison you’re going to take. So if you’re going to stand up for something, stand up for your truth, it’ll shape you.”
Jordan Peterson, quoted by Tim Moen “MY Letter to Young Libertarians” in The Post Millennial September 4, 2018
"Every right is a divine right."
G.K. Chesterton in Illustrated London News December 20, 1924 quoted in Gilbert Magazine Vol. VIII #7 (June 2005)
In my latest National Post column I say it’s odd for people claiming to stand against Trump-style divisive politics to rant and rave about Doug Ford as a dictator trampling our rights.
"If there are commands of God, then there must be rights of man."
G.K. Chesterton in “The Empire of the Insect” in What’s Wrong with the World, quoted in Gilbert Magazine Vol. 12 #4 (Jan.-Feb. 2009).
In my latest Loonie Politics piece I say the real question about shrinking Toronto City Council is why people who call Doug Ford an evil rights-hating maniac for invoking the Notwithstanding Clause to protect legislative authority aren’t even slightly concerned about judges routinely invoking Section 1 of the Charter to infringe fundamental rights like free speech.
BTW this particular piece is not behind a paywall. But Loonie Politics depends on subscriber support. So please sign up for their monthly or annual plan to support their work… and mine.
