In my latest National Post column I condemn Canadians’ support for compulsory youth service to give us free money not defend freedom.
“Moral decay contributed to the dissolution [of the Roman Empire]. The virile character that had been formed by arduous simplicities and a supporting faith relaxed in the sunshine of wealth and the freedom of unbelief; men had now, in the middle and upper classes, the means to yield to temptation, and only expediency to restrain them. Urban congestion multiplied contacts and frustrated surveillance; immigration brought together a hundred cultures whose differences rub themselves out into indifference. Moral and esthetic standards were lowered by the magnetism of the mass; and sex ran riot in freedom while political liberty decayed. The greatest of historians held that Christianity was the chief cause of Rome’s fall.”
Will Durant Caesar and Christ [the greatest of historians is of course Edward Gibbon - but it is not immediately obvious that Christianity caused any of the things Durant just listed including unbelief or sex running riot]
“I can’t wait until American women can’t get blueberries for their smoothies”
Jenna Arnold, “activist and Democrat political strategist” attacking Donald Trump’s immigration policies on CNN, quoted by Daily Mail Jan. 29, 2025 [hinting that she might be slightly elitist and out of touch]
In my latest Epoch Times column I say Canadian authorities’ feeble justifications for cancelling concerts because they don’t like the singer or the lyrics show just how little they understand free speech… or even think about it.
In my latest C2C essay I explain why people hate photo radar: it’s a brazen violation of the rule of law and the social contract to fine citizens for normal behaviour.
In my latest Epoch Times column I say that when our finance minister claims a call for efficiencies he doesn’t even realize he has no idea how to find represents “a long-term transformation of government” it confirms that those in power think words are deeds and wishes are horses. Which is why they never actually study how government works.
“A real spiritual abyss only opens when men appear to us to be boasting of bad actions; and this is true of nearly all that modern politicians and philanthropists boast of as their good actions. Social idealism is often actually Satanic; in the quite cold and rational sense that it claims to be the creator. To start the opposite ideal, of creatures being creative, or rather procreative, by a direct authority from the Creator, is not only a difficulty but a risk. It involves the probability of some abuse of freedom in practice. When the abuse is abominable, the true function of Government reappears; which is to exclude extreme abominations.”

In my latest Epoch Times column I follow up on the question of where the feds expect to find $150 billion a year for defence alone by warning that the overall fiscal situation is far worse than they think including, crucially, how little time they have to fix it.
